Bana Pele
Privacy policy
Last updated 18 October 2026
This policy explains what personal information Bana Pele collects through www.banapele.org, why, how it is protected, and your rights under South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). It also covers publications.banapele.org, where Bana Pele publishes Sandpit, the Shared Blueprint and the Bana Pele Charter.
Who we are
Bana Pele (“children first”) is a movement that unites government, business, civil society, practitioners, families and communities to make affordable, quality early learning available to every child in South Africa. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean Bana Pele and its Secretariat, who decide how the personal information collected through these sites is used.
The short version
You can read everything on this site without telling us who you are. We only collect the details you choose to send us through the Join form or by email, and use them only for the Bana Pele movement. The site uses Google Analytics cookies to understand how it is used, and you can say no to them. We never sell your information.
What we collect
- When you join the movement. Your name, email address and organisation, through the Join the Movement form.
- When you email us. Your email address and whatever you include in your message to admin@banapele.org.
- How the site is used (analytics cookies). We use Google Analytics to see, in aggregate, which pages are read, how long for, what device and browser is used, the approximate location (city or country) and how people found the site. It sets cookies in your browser to do this. Google Analytics does not store your IP address, and we cannot identify you from these reports. We use no advertising cookies and do not share analytics with advertisers.
- Technical information. Our hosting provider briefly processes your IP address, browser type and the pages requested, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse and spam (for example, by limiting how many times the Join form can be sent from one connection). We do not use this to identify you.
Why we use it
- To contact you about joining the movement, and to understand where you or your organisation can contribute. We do this with your consent, which you give by sending the Join form.
- To reply to your emails and requests.
- To keep you informed about Bana Pele, its actions and its events. You can ask us to stop at any time.
- To understand how the site is used so we can improve it (analytics), and to keep it secure.
We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
Who processes it for us
A few trusted service providers (“operators” in POPIA) process information on our behalf, only for the purposes above:
- Cloudflare hosts the site and keeps a secure copy of each Join form sign-up, so that none is lost.
- Resend delivers each Join form sign-up by email to the Bana Pele Secretariat.
- Microsoft provides the admin@banapele.org mailbox where sign-ups and emails are received.
- Google provides Google Analytics.
- 1Pulse Digital builds and maintains the sites for Bana Pele.
We share personal information with partners in the movement only where it is needed to follow up on your offer to contribute, and only with your knowledge. We may disclose information if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- Join form sign-ups and emails: for as long as you are part of the movement or we are dealing with your request, or until you ask us to delete them, unless the law requires us to keep them longer.
- Analytics: Google Analytics keeps visit data for up to 14 months, after which it is deleted automatically.
- Technical logs: kept by our hosting provider only briefly, for security.
Cookies and your choice
Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. This site uses only Google Analytics cookies (named _ga and _ga_…, kept for up to 14 months) to count visits. When you first visit, a notice at the foot of the page lets you choose:
- OK keeps analytics on;
- No thanks switches Google Analytics off in your browser for this site.
Your choice is remembered in your browser. To change it later, clear this site’s data in your browser settings and choose again. You can also block cookies, or use Google’s opt-out add-on.
Where your information is kept
The services we use run on servers outside South Africa: Cloudflare (worldwide), Google (mainly in the United States and Europe), Resend (Europe and the United States) and Microsoft. POPIA allows this when the receiving company is bound by protections similar to POPIA’s. Each of these providers processes information only on our behalf, under data processing terms that require them to keep it secure and confidential.
How we keep it safe
The site is served only over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), with security settings that stop other sites from embedding or altering its pages. Access to the information we hold is limited to the people at Bana Pele who need it for the purposes above.
Children
The site is for adults and organisations. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you have a concern about a photograph of a child on the site, email us and we will look into it promptly.
Your rights
Under POPIA you may:
- ask whether we hold personal information about you, and for a copy of it;
- ask us to correct, update or delete it;
- object to how we use it, or withdraw your consent, at any time;
- ask us to stop sending you updates about the movement.
To do any of these, email admin@banapele.org. We will reply within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa).
Information Officer
Questions about this policy, or about how Bana Pele handles personal information, can be sent to our Information Officer at admin@banapele.org.
Links to other sites
Links to other websites, and share buttons that open WhatsApp, LinkedIn or email, take you to services with their own privacy policies. Nothing is sent to them until you choose to share.
Changes to this policy
If what we collect or how we use it changes, we will update this page and the date at the top.
